The passage of the 18th Amendment in 1919 marked the official start of Prohibition in the United States, but that didn’t keep New Yorkers from drinking. The city was the epicenter of the resistance to the Prohibition movement, and the market for alcohol spawned a huge amount of speakeasies and nightclubs that a lasting impact on New York City culture.

The 18th Amendment isn’t what we’re celebrating nearly 100 years later, though. The 21st Amendment repealed prohibition on Dec. 5, 1933, and at bars around the U.S. you can still find celebrations every year harkening back to the days when liquor didn’t flow freely and downing drinks could have more drastic consequences than a headache the next morning.
