If you’re new to the area, we understand how tough that can be. We have members coming from all over the world and many of them at the start didn’t know much about America, let alone the mixed neighbourhood of Bed-Stuyvesant! Let us help you with some of the basics, so you can start exploring the neighborhood almost immediately.

 

Subway/Travel

It's really up to you, but here are the main ways to get to Manhattan!

 

The M train - Myrtle Avenue

The M train is a 7-minute walk from the House. Just make a left when you exit the House, another left on either Marcus Garvey Boulevard or Lewis Avenue, then make a right on Myrtle Avenue.

The G Train - Myrtle-Willoughby Ave

The G train is a little further than the M-train, but still conveniently located with just about 10-minutes’ walk from the House. To get there, make a right when you exit the House, then make a right once you’ve made it to Marcy Avenue. Walk three blocks and voila, you’ve reached the Myrtle-Willoughby Ave.

Need your morning fix? Here are some places hand picked for you

 

Marcy & Myrtle Cafe - 574 Marcy Avenue, Brooklyn

This is one of the places in the neighborhood that had immediately caught our eyes. Both the exterior and interior designs make for amazing photographs! It doesn't hurt that their coffee and pastries are also mouth-watering.

Brooklyn Whiskers - 760 Bushwick Ave, Brooklyn

This cafe is heaven-sent for vegans. It specializes in plant-based pastries and other Insta-worthy custom creations.

Bedford Hill Coffee Bar - 343  Franklin Ave, Brooklyn

Bedford Hill Coffee Bar claims to be an ideal spot for first-time dates, meetings between long lost friends, and everyday visitors. We agree! Besides coffee and tea, it also serves beer and wine.

Ange Noir Cafe - 247 Varet St

Do you want a taste of France? The head on to the Ange Noir Cafe which is owned and operated by a French couple. The cafe has options that cater to all types of dietary preferences, including vegan and gluten-free fare.

BKYLN Commons - 774 Broadway Avenue, Brooklyn

BKLYN Blend - 194 Tompkins Ave, Brooklyn

This neighborhood joint looks simple from the outside. But it offers tasty and authentic Balkan delicacies that you have to try out!

Little Skips - 941 Willoughby Ave, Brooklyn

Head here if you're into high-quality yet affordable sandwiches. The two we would recommend are the cafe's Vegan LBT - made with smokey maple tempeh bacon, tomato, mixed greens and house-made vegan cilantro-lime aioli, served on wheat toast - and The Norwegian -made with goat cheese, smoked salmon, tomato, avocado, red onion, mixed greens & honey-lemon vinaigrette, served on grilled multigrain.

Rocco Pizza - 765 Dekalb Ave Brooklyn

A slice of pizza costs only $2! Check out Rocco’s specialty pizzas too. Our suggestion? Eat in rather than take-away. Because the interior design will make you feel like you’re dining in a small, family-owned restaurant in Italy. Buon Appetito!

Alphaville

This versatile space has something for everyone. So go and enjoy the good food and drinks here, while being accompanied by live music.

Bizarre Bushwick - 12 Jefferson St, Brooklyn

“Assorted Madness and The Unexpected.”

According to the New York Magazine, the owner of Bizarre are filmmakers. This is definitely translated in the monthly shows this space organizes. Go check it out!

Wine-o

This bar offers a variety of wines, including those that are made with grapes grown without synthetic chemicals. It also organizes a "tasting evening" every Friday.  Now that would make for great and educational night out.

Parks

One thing we love about this neighborhood is how it is surrounded by parks. If you ever need to wind down from a stressful day, a simple 20-30 minutes around the various parks here would definitely do the magic.
