Dun-Well Donuts is our favorite place to satisfy our sweet tooth in East Williamsburg. Located on Montrose Avenue, just around the corner from the Montrose L stop and our East Williamsburg House, this cafe is doughnut and coffee heaven with a conscience.

Established in 2011, Dun-Well began with a Simpsons episode and a doughnut craving. Christopher Hollowell (the "Well" in Dun-Well) called up his old college friend Dan Dunbar (the "Dun" in Dun-Well), looking for a quality vegan doughnut shop in NYC. To their amazement, they couldn’t find anything that made the cut, so they decided to do it themselves — opening NYC's first all-vegan doughnut cafe.

Dun-Well is a gem on Montrose Avenue. Step through the glass doors into a vintage interior with plenty of seating and natural light, and, of course, a large glass case filled with a variety of delicious doughnut flavors.

Each doughnut is handcrafted daily, with a changing menu, which means you’re always getting something special. The daily menu is announced on their Instagram (which will make you hungry just looking at it), with a rotating list of 200 varieties. Our recent favorites have been The Homer, a signature pink sprinkles doughnut inspired by the Simpsons, the PB & J and a delicious Blueberry French Toast. You can choose from regular, filled or cake doughnuts, starting from just $1.50 each or ½ dozen for $14.

There’s also a complete range of espresso and coffee drinks on offer, expertly prepared on a top-of-the-line La Marzoccos, and a selection of tea and other drinks, making it the perfect place to chill out with friends or work on your screenplay for an afternoon.

Even though Montrose Avenue is filled with trendy cafes and bakeries, Dun-Well has beaten the odds to become a successful business, with a second store recently opened on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. This is a testament to the quality of their doughnuts, which you wouldn’t be able to tell were vegan if we hadn’t just told you.

At the heart of Dun-Well’s philosophy is ethics; they’re committed to using only quality ingredients and supporting local businesses. All of their products are free of animal or animal-derived ingredients and both their coffee and doughnuts are made with organic ingredients. In fact, their coffee is organic, Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance certified, hand roasted daily by local Brooklyn Roasting Company. Now that’s some feel-good indulgence.
