It’s that time of year again: Pi Day is upon us. But with so many bakeries to choose from and a limit to how many slices you can physically fit in your stomach, how do you decide which bakeries to try? Here are our top picks:

Four & Twenty Blackbirds

Consistently voted the best pie in Brooklyn, Four & Twenty Blackbirds has to be the first recommendation on our list. This tiny pie shop has garnered an international reputation since its 2009 opening, being featured in a variety of international food publications including The New York Times. Founded by sisters Melissa and Emily Elsen, the pies are a product of their childhoods spent making pies with their Grandma Liz in South Dakota, and the Brooklyn outpost still holds these same family values, with the pies coming handmade with all-butter crusts.

The shop is particularly famous for its salted-caramel apple pie, which is a little slice of something wonderful, and the pumpkin, lemon and salted honey varieties are also crowd pleasers. All of the ingredients are sourced locally and organically wherever possible. You can find these delicious slices in your neighborhood, just a short walk from our Downtown Brooklyn House.

Buttah

Buttah is another Brooklyn favorite. Located on Onderdonk Avenue, a 15-minute walk from our Ridgewood House, this under-the-radar bakery is one of the neighborhood’s best kept secrets. Just don’t expect to sit down, because it’s a traditional pie shop, not a café, which means it’s all about pick up and go. A neon pink sign is the only giveaway that there’s a rich range of pies and creamy cupcakes inside the door — with deliciously Brooklyn prices.

Rudy’s Bakery & Café

If you want traditional, homestyle pies, try Rudy's Bakery & Café, a Ridgewood landmark since 1934. This historic bakery has an extensive line of pastries, strudels, cupcakes and, of course, pies, in a space filled with old-world charm that you just can’t fake that’s only a 7-minute walk from our Ridgewood House. The smell of freshly made fruit, cream and seasonal pies fills the air and the wood-paneled walls take you back to your grandparents’ homemade recipes. We love their cookie-crust Nutella tarts made by Pastry Chef Cristina.

Brooklyn Whiskers

Or why not check out Brooklyn Whiskers, a vegan outpost in the heart of Bushwick with some pretty incredible pie. Tucked away in a little yellow corner on Bushwick Avenue, this vegan bakery and café serves the best plant-based pastries and custom creations in Bushwick, as well as amazing coffee roasted by local Caffe Vita. Our favorite is the gluten free Oatmeal Cream Pie, but the daily changing menu has a whole range of options to meet your fancy. Brooklyn Whiskers is just a short walk from our Bushwick House.
